Jerry York is the winningest active coach in NCAA hockey history, and with over 1,000 wins, he leads the all-time list by a Division 1 coach.
Born on July 25, 1945, Jerry York is a 'Double Eagle,' having graduated from Boston College High School (1963) and Boston College (1967). He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. He assumed the head coaching position in 1972, and coached the Clarkson squad for seven seasons, including 1976-77 when the team won the ECAC regular season title.

In 1979, he moved to Bowling Green State University in Ohio to take over the coaching reins of the hockey team. Through 15 seasons at the school, York led his teams to nine 20-win seasons, four Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) regular season titles, one CCHA tournament title, six NCAA tournament appearances, and a national title in 1984.
York was lured to coach hockey at Boston College, his alma mater, in 1994 to help rebuild the hockey program. In the 1997–98 season, his first with the Eagles, the team reached the NCAA title game.

His successes through 18 seasons include nine Hockey East regular season titles (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017), nine Hockey East tournament titles (1998, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012), nine Beanpot Tournament titles (2001, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016), twelve NCAA tournament appearances, and four national titles (2001, 2008, 2010, 2012). The 2001 title was the first national title for Boston College since 1949. Those four national titles tie Jerry York with Murray Armstrong of the University of Denver Pioneers for second place. Only Vic Heyliger, coach of the University of Michigan Wolverines, has more national titles with six. In addition, Jerry York's Boston College squads have enjoyed 12 Frozen Four appearances in 15 years between 1998 and 2016. During his tenure, the Eagles have played in the National Championship Game on eight occasions.
Still active, York's contract will ensure that he remains the head coach of the Boston College Eagles through the 2019-20 season, his 26th season with the school and his 46th season of coaching. His record with Boston College to this date shows 608 wins, 315 losses and 86 ties for a .642 winning percentage. Through his entire coaching career, he has collected 1,067 wins, 650 losses and 120 ties for a .614 winning percentage. His milestone 1,000th win took place on January 22, 2016. With the victory, he became the first NCAA Division 1 coach to reach this plateau.
Jerry York's long, successful coaching career has garnered a number of wonderful awards of recognition. He was awarded Coach of the Year in the Spencer Penrose Division I in 1977, was named the CCHA's Coach of the Year in 1982 and was the Hockey East Coach of the Year in 2004, 2011, 2014 and 2018. In 2010, York was named one of the recipients of the Lester Patrick Trophy in honour of his contributions to hockey in the United States.
